Fossil coral, also known as agatized coral, is a natural gemstone formed when prehistoric coral undergoes a gradual replacement process with agate. While white is the most common shade of coral, variations in pink, orange, red, and black can also be found, with deep red being the rarest hue. The coral itself has a hard outer skeleton made of calcium carbonate, which is slowly dissolved by acidic groundwater and partially replaced with dissolved silica to create the unique agate formation.
